Want to Train?
Apprenticeships can provide you with training and let you earn some money at the same time. You can work for an employer, learn on the job, build up knowledge and skill, and gain qualifications. There are
different levels of apprenticeships. If you leave school you could become an apprentice. It takes 12 months to gain an NVQ level 2, relevant skills and possibly a technical certificate. You can then either
move on to an advanced apprenticeships or continue your education and training in other ways. Some great up-to-date information about apprenticeships can be accessed at the An Apprenticeship Website
Apprenticeships - Key Points
Apprenticeships were developed by employers as foundation skills for all staff to meet both your requirements and those of your employers.
The qualification you aim for is an NVQ level 2 with extra key skills. Your skills will be a craft / semi-skilled technician level technical certificate.
Training lasts up to 2 years.
You are usually paid by the employer (depending on the Apprenticeship you choose) or you can get an education maintance allowance of up to £30 per week to which the employer may add other expenses i.e. travel.
To get an apprenticeship you will need to go through selection tests and interviews.
Apprenticeships provide young people aged between 16-25 with real skills that employers want.
You learn by working with a local company and work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and Key Skills. NVQs are job based qualifications that are recognised
nationally by employers. Key skills are general skills necessary for work, such as IT and communication skills.
You will receive a suitable rate of pay agreed with the employer, or you will be paid a training allowance.
The main routes to learning are an Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeships. You will receive help to make sure you choose the correct one for your career.
They take between 1-2 years (minimum) to complete depending on what type of learning you follow and the speed of your progress.
The people who organise your training are called Training Providers. They can be a local college or a specialist training centre. They conduct regular reviews with you to see how you are getting on and assist your progress.

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are nationally recognised qualifications based on standards connected to your performance within a proper working environment. They show
employers that you are committed to your work and are seen as an appropriate and relevant qualification for building a career. Employers greatly value NVQs because they prove you
can do a job to the standards their businesses require.

Key Skills are vital for you to succeed in work and life. As part of your Apprenticeship you will be given help to develop your key skills which include:

Technical Certificates
Recent changes to Apprenticeships include the gradual introduction of technical certificates to many of the training frameworks over the next few years. These will strengthen the knowledge
and understanding of apprentices. These technical certificates will be part of the assessed programme of off the job learning. Training Providers will be able to advise if and when technical
certificates will form part of any particular Apprenticeship framework.
