Additional Help

Do you have an additional educational need? If so, you have many choices to think about: Do you want to go to college? Do you want to have some independence? Would you like a job?

If you have a learning difficulty or disability, Connexions can carry on helping you until you're 25 years old.

Transition Plans

Before you leave school you have to be assessed and a transition plan has to be written. The plan will explain what your needs are, so that the college or place of learning you are going to will understand. You can write part of the transition plan too, or say what should be in it. Your parents or carers will be able to add things to it as well. Talk to your Personal Adviser when they write the plan.

Money

If you want to carry on with learning, you may be able to get help with funding:

Disability Living Allowance is for people needing personal care or help getting around. There are 3 levels of care allowance and 2 levels of disability allowance. How much you get depends on how much help you need.

You can get Disability Persons Tax Credit (DPTC) if a disability means you can only earn a limited amount. You have to be working more than 16 hours a week to get this.

You can claim Incapacity Benefit (IB) if you can’t work because of a disability.

You may be entitled to Education Maintenance Allowances (EMA) if your family’s income is less than £30,000 a year.

Your parents or carers may be able to carry on claiming Child Benefit until you are 19 if you stay in full-time education.

Sometimes people in education can claim income support. To find out what kind of benefits you can get, ask at your local Connexions centre.
